Islam Makhachev has defended his decision to decline a January title defense against Carlos Prates, a move that forced the UFC to book an interim welterweight championship between Prates and Michael Morales at UFC 336 in Toronto.
Makhachev released a video statement after the interim bout was announced Saturday in Abu Dhabi during UFC 333, according to MMA Mania. The lightweight champion argued that Prates recently lost to Ian Machado Garry, an opponent Makhachev defeated at UFC 330 in August. "If I beat him, Morales would already be next in line, who's not fighting and waiting for [a title shot]," he said in the clip. "Just let them fight, and we will figure out who's the real challenger."
UFC president Dana White expressed frustration at the post-fight press conference for UFC 333, per the report. "On average, Islam fights like once a year," White said. "He was slated for January and then said I don't want to fight until after Ramadan. You can't hold up divisions like this." White confirmed the promotion had been working toward a Makhachev appearance at the January card before the champion withdrew.
Play-by-play voice Jon Anik told viewers during the Abu Dhabi broadcast that Makhachev initially agreed to return before Ramadan but changed his stance once Prates was formally offered. The champion has previously suggested the UFC was responsible for his infrequent schedule, though this episode shows him turning down a January slot the promotion wanted to fill.
Prates and Morales will now compete for interim gold on January 25 at UFC 336, with the winner expected to face Makhachev later in 2027.
