Makhachev Fires Back At Dvalishvili Over Flag Controversy

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev dismissed criticism from Merab Dvalishvili after the former bantamweight titleholder took issue with the Russian flag being raised following Makhachev's win at UFC 330.

Makhachev defended his strap for the first time with a decision over Ian Garry earlier this month, and his team displayed the Russian flag during the in-cage celebration. Dvalishvili, who lost his bantamweight title to Petr Yan last December, claimed the gesture was unfair given restrictions on flag displays at most sporting events due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Sherdog reports.

Makhachev Backs Yan To Silence Dvalishvili At UFC 333

Speaking at a press conference, Makhachev suggested Dvalishvili has consistently resented his achievements. The lightweight-turned-welterweight champion pointed out that Yan raised the same flag after dethroning Dvalishvili in their December clash. Yan defends the bantamweight belt against Dvalishvili in their trilogy fight at UFC 333 on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi.

"From the very beginning, he wasn't happy about my success in the Octagon," Makhachev said. "But I don't pay attention to those things. He's already spoken about this many times. But Petr Yan beat him and raised the flag in the Octagon. I think [Yan] will beat him again now and silence him for good."

Makhachev holds a 29-1 record, while Dvalishvili stands at 21-5 heading into the October showdown in the UAE.
