Islam Makhachev has stopped lifting weights.

The UFC welterweight champion told MMA Junkie that his preparation for Ian Garry at UFC 330 on Aug. 15 differs drastically from the camp that preceded his title-winning performance against Jack Della Maddalena last year. Back then, the former lightweight king focused on adding mass through a heavy lifting program. This time around, his body has settled into the heavier division naturally.

Makhachev's Body Adapted To Welterweight Weight Class

"Now, I feel more comfortable, honestly," Makhachev said, per MMA Junkie. "The first camp, so hard. I just tried to gain weight, do a lot of lifting program, but this camp I stay at the same weight. I'm not going to go down. Now, I'm like real welterweight. This camp I think is more easy, but you can't say it's easy, because we're not lifting much."

The Russian's first welterweight outing saw him prioritize belt acquisition over finishing Della Maddalena, taking the decision after five rounds. Against Garry at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Makhachev plans to force a stoppage. He believes the Irishman's grappling weaknesses create a clear path to a finish once the fight hits the canvas.

Makhachev said he expects to finish Garry after studying tape of his ground game. The champion views the undefeated challenger's striking and distance control as his primary threats, but sees a vulnerability the moment the fight transitions to wrestling exchanges.
