UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has withdrawn from his title defense against Carlos Prates at UFC 336 on Jan. 30 in Toronto, Ag Fight first reported Friday.
No explanation has been given for the pullout. Dana White declined to confirm the news, calling the report "interesting" when asked about it.
The promotion has not announced plans for the No. 1-ranked Prates, who had been set for his first UFC title shot at Scotiabank Arena. One potential scenario is an interim belt fight against No. 3-ranked Michael Morales, though nothing has been confirmed.
Makhachev last defended the strap against Ian Garry at UFC 330 in August and has since voiced frustration over the backlog of contenders at 170 pounds. The 34-year-old Russian holds a 29-1 career record and was coming off his third successful title defense.
UFC 336 is now without a main event less than four months out from the scheduled date.
