Islam Makhachev showed off his new ‘Oxygen Cylinder’ submission, showing his innovative nature to the sport.
Makhachev recently made history by becoming a two-weight world champion when he defeated Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last November to add the welterweight belt. The win followed his title at lightweight, as Islam became the best P4P fighter in the world. The win was all the more impressive since JDM had enlisted the help of Craig Jones, showing he was taking grappling seriously.
“Jack’s cardio is exceptional. His power is exceptional. I like the fight, I really do. Jack’s cardio, as we saw, Belal’s reputedly the best cardio in the UFC and Jack out-cardioed him. Belal was more tired than Jack towards the end of the fight. The confidence Jack gets from having Craig, the second best grappler in the world, self-confessed, in his camp… Craig says himself, he picks things up from Jack all the time. The confidence from having Craig sharpens up the grappling side of things,” Ben Vickers (JDM’s coach) said
Despite being at the top of the sport, Makhachev is not letting complacency to get to him. The following clip shows him using his new move on his Dagestani training partners. Makhachev can be seen using a D’Arce choke, followed by his forearm to cover the airway, forcing his teammate to tap.

Makhachev’s next move is unclear. He has been linked with a fight against ex-welterweight champ Kamaru Usman, while a fight against the undefeated Michael Morales was also mentioned. There is also talk of a potential fight against the lightweight champ Ilia Topuria, although Islam has said the fight can only happen at welterweight.
“I had the belt at lightweight. No one beat me there. I just left the belt and moved up. For what? For a belt? That’s not interesting to me.If Ilia wants to move up, then welcome. He can because he has nothing to lose by moving up. If he loses, he goes back down to lightweight, and that’s it. He’ll defend his belt there. I’ve already been the lightweight champion, and I’m definitely not going back down to 155 pounds,” Islam said
