Masvidal On Amosov Versus Makhachev Matchup

Jorge Masvidal believes former Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov would pose serious problems for Islam Makhachev and the entire UFC welterweight division.

Masvidal, speaking on the Deep Waters podcast, called the Ukrainian fighter a bad stylistic matchup for everyone in the welterweight top 10 and even the lightweight champion. "He's a bad fight for everybody," Masvidal said, per Sherdog. "Even Makhachev, all the way down to No. 10, Yaroslav is that good."

Why Amosov Matches Up Well With Makhachev

The former title challenger broke down specific advantages Amosov holds over the Dagestani champion. "Nightmare for Makhachev," Masvidal added. "Bigger, longer, and I'm going to say probably stronger, as well." Masvidal pointed to Amosov's sambo credentials and wrestling pedigree as keys to handling Makhachev's body lock and foot sweep game.

Amosov trains at American Top Team alongside Masvidal and Dustin Poirier, who also praised the Ukrainian's skill set in the same discussion. The former Bellator champion has opened his UFC run with submission wins over Neil Magny and Joel Alvarez.

Makhachev currently holds the lightweight strap but has teased a move to welterweight for legacy fights. No timeline exists for that jump or for Amosov earning a title shot in his new promotion.
