Maycee Barber’s well-being became a major topic around the MMA world Saturday night. The flyweight fighter took on Alexa Grasso for the second time on Saturday, losing again to the Mexican fighter.
Barber, who lost the first fight via unanimous decision, suffered a devastating loss at 2:42 in the first round. Grasso hit her with two combinations, sending her to the ground. Once she fell, Grasso hit her again in the face before choking her. The referee stopped the fight, but Barber didn’t look too well.
She tried to get help from the official before he lay her on the ground, as the doctors rushed to Barber’s aid. The sequence was shocking, and many worried about the 27-year-old’s well-being after such a tough loss.
Barber was taken to the hospital for precautionary CT scans. She reposted an image from her partner, Oscar Herrera, on Instagram stories, to let fans know she was ok.
“Part of the game,” Herrera wrote on Instagram with a photo of Barber checking her phone. “Congrats to Alexa. We got caught but are okay. We’ll be back soon, thanks for everyone checking in.”
Barber entered the octagon on a seven-fight winning streak. Ironically, her last loss was to Grasso. “The Future” dropped to 15-3 with Saturday’s defeat.
