Maycee Barber is staying off social media to avoid seeing replays of her devastating setback this past Saturday.
The women’s flyweight contender had her seven-fight winning streak snapped and hopes to challenge for Valentina Shevchenko’s title next spoiled at UFC Seattle.
In the co-main event, Alexa Grasso knocked out Maycee Barber on the feet before locking her in a tight choke prior to the referee having a chance to intervene.
That finishing sequence is being widely described as one of the scariest of all time inside the Octagon, and the victim of it has spoken publicly for the first time since it happened.
Before her defeat at the Climate Pledge Arena, Barber had put herself in title contention with a run of wins that included triumphs over Amanda Ribas, Katlyn Cerminara, and Karine Silva.
The streak started after a decision loss to Grasso in 2021, and the 27-year-old was expecting to avenge that result against the former champion at UFC Seattle.
Instead, she was left unconscious in a frightening scene that left many concerned for her health.
A medical update on Barber emerged when her husband posted from hospital, and the No. 5-ranked flyweight contender has now issued her own statement.
“Well this is not the post or video that I wanted to be making today,” Barber said in a video on Instagram. “But I wanted to come on here and say thank you to the UFC and thank you to Alexa for the opportunity.
“I wanted to go out there and get my opportunity to get my rematch and dominate and get the win back and unfortunately, it was not my night. I got caught and Alexa did an amazing thing. She’s a phenomenal fighter.
“I don’t really remember a whole lot. All I know is every time I go on social media I look like I’m dead and that’s not a very fun thing to see. So I’ve been trying to stay off social media but I also wanted to come on here and tell you guys that I am OK.”
Saturday’s co-main event marked the latest setback delaying her planned rise to UFC gold.
Barber previously struggled with a mystery illness that hospitalized the 27-year-old and left her out of action for 21 months after her victory over ex-title challenger Cerminara.
Barber will now be focused on making a full recovery on the sidelines before attempting to make a swift return to winning ways inside the cage.
