Conor McGregor spent media day at UFC 329 explaining, in considerable detail, what he plans to do to Max Holloway on Saturday night.
"I plan to contort Max's body in such uncomfortable positions, and have my way with him, and that's it," McGregor
What is harder to dismiss is the challenge McGregor (22-6) has set for himself. Holloway (27-9) is not a fighter returning from a long layoff. He is one of the most active and accomplished fighters in the sport, a former featherweight champion who has competed across three weight classes, defended the BMF title, and gone five rounds with the best the division has to offer in recent years.
"Max is a great dance partner, a great opponent. If I didn't have the fire or the hunger, yet I'm up against one of the most active bodies in the fight game in Max Holloway — I just think it's silly to say this. The challenge is colossal. The challenge ahead of me is colossal. I'm entering with supreme confidence. It's magnificent; the fire is in my belly roaring, and it's about to be released on Saturday night,” McGregor
The five-year absence is the fact that overshadows everything else about this fight. McGregor has not competed since suffering the leg fracture against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, and a 2024 return attempt against Michael Chandler was cancelled when he broke his toe in sparring weeks before the scheduled date. Whether McGregor's body can still execute what his mind is planning after the layoff and the injuries is unknown.
