This past weekend, Michael Bisping’s son made his MMA debut, unbeknownst to the UFC legend who had no idea it was happening.
During his legendary career in the UFC, Michael Bisping became well-known for his tendency to never give up and to never back down from a challenge.
And throughout that time, his family were by his side, every step of the way, and his fans became more familiar with those closest to him.
Although the UFC legend has been long-retired from the sport, the Bisping name is seemingly set to live on, as this past weekend, his eldest son Callum Bisping made his debut in the sport.
With ‘The Count’ still being majorly involved in the MMA world, he has often attempted to share stories of his son’s accomplishments, and Callum went on to achieve accolades in the wrestling world, sharing his journey on social media.
However, in 2023, Callum announced his retirement from wrestling after competing in the NCAA Division 2 for San Francisco State University, which seemingly marked the beginning of his career in MMA.
And with that, this past Saturday, the 24-year-old made his MMA debut, winning the fight via a decision after utterly dominating his opponent, utilizing his dominant wrestling pedigree.
And although many fans may have thought that the legendary former UFC middleweight champion would be with him every step of the way, his father didn’t even know his son was making his MMA debut until the day before.
“So he had a fight on Saturday night,” Bisping said on the recent Believe You Me Podcast.
“Didn’t tell me about it, I didn’t know, and again, I respect it because he wanted to do it under the radar, he didn’t wanna make a big deal about it, he just wanted to show up with his coach, have the fight and come back.
“Friday morning, me and (my wife)… go out for breakfast and we go down there and there’s Callum with his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s Mum, and they’re in the same restaurant. And his girlfriend’s Mum says, ‘Are you guys going to the fight?’ and I wanted to play along so I didn’t look like a fool… He hadn’t told us.
“His girlfriend’s Mum is talking about his walkout music and everything and I’m like, ‘You’ve picked walkout music, you’re having a fight? You haven’t even told me.’ It was so embarrassing at that moment, I was fuming,” Bisping continued.
Bisping went on to explain that his son decided to do it on his own and didn’t want to make a big thing of it, wanting to get out of his father’s shadow.
Both Bisping’s may be hopeful that one day, Callum is strapping on the UFC gloves ahead of a fight under the promotional powerhouse banner.
They would join an extremely small group of father/son combos in the promotion’s history, which at this point only includes two.
Randy Couture and his son Ryan Couture both competed for the promotion, as well as Gilbert Smith and Elijah Smith.
And this coming weekend at UFC Vegas 112, another father/son combo will be achieved when Lance Gibson Jr. takes on Bobby Green. Lance Gibson Sr. fought in the UFC in 2000, losing his lone fight.
