Mokaev Reveals Why He Turned Down UFC Title Shot

Muhammad Mokaev turned down a UFC title opportunity because the promotion refused to connect it to a full return to the flyweight roster.

Mokaev, who parted ways with the UFC in 2024 despite an unbeaten record, told BBC Sport that he was offered a grappling match against Mikey Musumeci for the UFC BJJ title but declined when officials made clear the bout would not lead to an MMA contract. The Dagestan-born Brit said he was willing to accept the $10,000 payday if it came with a path back to the 125-pound division.

Mokaev Wanted MMA Return Tied To Grappling Match

"They said, 'No, this is different. BJJ is different. This is different. We have other plans.' I told them where to go," Mokaev said, per BBC Sport.

The UFC opted not to re-sign Mokaev after his unanimous decision win over top-ranked Manel Kape, a performance that failed to impress brass. His pre-fight conduct reportedly soured promotional executives despite his perfect 17-0 record at the time. Mokaev has since added four more wins to his streak while competing in grappling and wrestling matches outside the promotion.

Mokaev's next steps remain unclear as he continues lobbying for a UFC flyweight return. The promotion has not publicly addressed whether it plans to bring him back for MMA competition.
