Nobody in the UFC is more active than Alex Pereira , a warrior who always steps up regardless of the opponent. Pereira’s popularity skyrocketed due to his devastating striking, thrilling knockouts, and his mysterious demeanor inside and outside the cage. The Brazilian fan favorite seemed unstoppable until UFC 313, where Magomed Ankalaev exposed weaknesses and handed him a shocking defeat.
The Russian fighter had a plan that he used effectively throughout the rounds to win the fight via a unanimous decision. Now, according to popular MMA journalist Ariel Helwani , it seems like ‘Poatan’ is close to taking his revenge. In a recent video, Helwani talked about Pereira potentially fighting in the main event of UFC 319 in Chicago.

Before his loss to Magomed Ankalaev, Pereira defended his light heavyweight belt against Khalil Rountree at UFC 307. It was his third fight in 2024, ending all title defenses via KO/TKO, something that left everybody in awe. However, the Brazilian doesn’t seem to wait and waste his days, and likes to stay as busy as possible.
Despite winning, Ankalaev still wants a rematch to silence Pereira’s claims and prove his superiority without any doubts. He confidently vowed to make the rematch short, ending it early with a dominant performance that leaves no room for controversy. Although Pereira may enter as the underdog, his terrifying knockout power always makes him a dangerous threat at any moment.

Going into UFC 313, Alex Pereira was the fan favorite due to his striking prowess and incredible momentum. However, he didn’t get the opportunity to use it against Magomed Ankalaev, who kept him guessing with his takedown threats. Pereira stuffed 12 takedowns, which was a testament to his improved takedown defense, but that significantly affected his striking.
Ankalaev was able to put immense pressure on the Brazilian and kept pushing forward, leaving no breathing space. Former title contender Khalil Rountree was present in the octagon side and saw everything up close. In a recent interview, he shared how Pereira looked different at UFC 313, which affected his performance.
It was hard for me to watch that fight and to score it…. But I just felt that the Alex that walked out that night was a different Alex that walked out the night that him and I fought. I just saw it because I was still – I know what it’s like to be there in the cage. So when I saw him walking out for Ankalaev, I just saw like a different guy. I watched it in frustration, you know? I couldn’t even really watch it. I was like, ‘I don’t understand what’s going on because it shouldn’t be like this.’

Pereira’s UFC journey has been largely dominant, showcasing brutal power and elite striking that overwhelmed most of his opponents completely. However, losses to Magomed Ankalaev and Israel Adesanya revealed vulnerabilities, exposing areas where Pereira could be controlled or outmaneuvered strategically. These defeats humanized Pereira, who is often regarded as an undefeated force inside the octagon.
Going into the rematch, Pereira can take revenge by refining his takedown defense, as well as effectively mixing with his striking. He could use his devastating leg kicks early to disrupt Ankalaev’s movement and limit his ability to shoot or counter effectively. Maintaining range and keeping the fight within his strength makes the most sense and it would be interesting how it turns out.

Maple Leafs Want to Trade Recently Signed Forward
The Toronto Maple Leafs reached an agreement on a contract extension with 23-year-old forward Nick Robertson, avoiding an arbitration case. Robertson signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs, earning him $1.825 million against the salary cap. While Robertson signed an extension with the Maple Leafs, it’s not likely he sticks around in Toronto for too much longer. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thought Podcast, the Maple Leafs have more players on their roster than they’d like and Robertson is the low hanging fruit in the lineup. “The Maple Leafs have to clear some bodies there,” Friedman said. “There’s a lot of them” Robertson has been connected to teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets, but it’ll be up to the Maple Leafs to decide if/where they want to send him. “I definitely think the Maple Leafs have work to do here,” I don’t know what their timeline is, but nobody expects them not to do things before puck drops, that’s for sure.” For a number of years, Robertson was one of the top prospects in the Maple Leafs system but hasn’t been able to find regular time in the NHL lineup. Whether through his own development as a professional hockey player or the Maple Leafs not having room in the lineup, Robertson hasn’t seen much NHL time in his career. Robertson appeared in a career-high 69 games during the 2024-25 season, recording 15 goals and seven assists for 22 total points. Usually relegated to the bottom six of the Maple Leafs’ lineup, Robertson has played in 156 career games with 32 goals and 24 assists for 56 points. Originally a second-round pick (53rd overall) of the Maple Leafs in 2019, Robertson’s time in Toronto might be coming to an end soon. Getting a new contract signed, even for a year, takes away another hurdle to cross for interested teams.
Cowboys' problem with Micah Parsons may hand Steelers a franchise QB
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most-talked-about NFL organizations throughout the course of the 2025 offseason. One of the biggest headlines that was attached to the franchise involved a rare May trade that sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Many expected the wide receiver to be dealt before or during the NFL Draft, but after a move didn't occur, it was believed that he would play out the final year of his rookie contract in the Steel City. Now, he is teaming up with CeeDee Lamb in the NFC, and a duo has been formed that could be very dangerous. Unfortunately for fans of the Cowboys, the two wide receivers have not been the talk of Dallas' training camp. Team owner Jerry Jones is playing hardball with edge-rusher Micah Parsons, and the talented defender recently requested a trade. The decision not to pay Parsons yet has left Jones under intense scrutiny, given the fact that the pass-rusher is one of the league's best. Jones' recent comments also show how dysfunctional the situation has become. In a recent appearance on ESPN's "Get Up," respected analyst Dan Orlovsky found a way to relate Parsons' situation to quarterback Dak Prescott, insinuating that if Jones does indeed trade Parsons, Prescott's Super Bowl window in Dallas would close. "If they trade [Parsons], and I don't think they do, if they trade him, it declares the Dak Prescott era over," Orlovsky said. "This team has no shot of winning a Super Bowl without Micah Parsons. No shot, and if you're doing it, it's to acquire a ton of first-round picks, so you have the ammunition to go get an Arch Manning of the future." The Steelers are set to have 12 draft picks in 2026, which gives the front office plenty of options when it comes to bringing in the next franchise quarterback. Instead of drafting one, however, could an available Prescott be a target for general manager Omar Khan? Orlovsky believes trading Parsons away would upset the Cowboys' best players. "There's no way that you can go to your locker room with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, some of the first-round picks you have on your offensive line, Trevon Diggs, and go, 'Hey, go beat Philadelphia when you don't have Micah Parsons. Go beat the Rams when you don't have Micah Parsons.' Your locker room will sit there and go like, 'Oh, well you've obviously moved on, so we're going to start our process of moving on as well.'" Any team interested in acquiring Prescott would have to take a long look at his contract. Some of the cap hits are astronomical in the coming years, but Khan is known to be a guru when it comes to the finances in deals. There's no reason to believe that he couldn't make something work for Prescott if a trade were to happen during the 2026 offseason. Fans in Dallas shouldn't be panicking just yet, but there were already some rumors about Prescott's long-term position with the Cowboys during the 2025 offseason. Certain reports were eventually debunked because it was quite literally impossible for Jones to entertain the idea of dealing Prescott after the franchise altered the quarterback's contract. Prescott has a no-trade clause, but that can always be waived, especially if he is upset about how Jones moves forward. If the Cowboys trade Parsons and pick up a plethora of draft capital, and then go on to invest in a first-round signal-caller, Prescott may be requesting to be traded as well. That's a long way away from happening, but the Steelers immediately come to mind as a team that would likely be interested. The Steelers' best-case scenario would be the emergence of Will Howard It's not easy to make a name for oneself in the NFL, and it's even tougher for players like Will Howard who were drafted in the sixth round. Pittsburgh will be in the quarterback market once again in 2026 if Aaron Rodgers is serious about retirement, so it would be a fantastic development if Howard solidifies himself as the next starter in the Steel City.
Tigers explode for best offensive performance in weeks, snap losing skid
The Detroit Tigers won on Sunday. Something that was such a common occurrence throughout most of the season happened again, but this time it snapped the Tigers' recent losing skid. After dropping three straight to Toronto and six in a row overall, the Tigers took the fourth game of their series, 10-4. The win, Detroit's 61st of the season, came with relative ease thanks to multiple big innings, most notably a seven-run eighth. Detroit also managed to put together its most productive offensive showing since the beginning of the month despite only hitting one home run as a team. The last time the Tigers scored 10 or more runs was when they hung 11 on the lowly Nationals on July 2. Speaking of only Detroit's lone home run, that's how the Tigers got on the board for the first time on Sunday. Gleyber Torres sent a pitch into the stands in right field with two runners already on base in the third. Torres' home run was his 10th in his debut season with Detroit after spending the first seven years of his career in New York with the Yankees. Then came the Tigers' big seventh inning, scoring a touchdown worth of runs for good measure. Torres drove in one more, giving him four RBI in the game. Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Javier Baez and Dillon Dingler, who sent two runners home, drove in the rest. Starter Jack Flaherty held the Blue Jays' potent lineup scoreless through his six innings of work. He gave up only six baserunners and struck out seven, earning only his second win of the month and first since July 8. Toronto did threaten, coming alive with a four-run ninth inning. But the Blue Jays' best efforts came too late, and Detroit was able to hang on for a much-needed victory. And while one single win won't be enough to calm the nerves of any Tigers fan concerned about their recent struggles — Detroit is 2-8 in its last 10 games — it needed to get one before worrying about stacking more. The Tigers will now start the new week, looking to start a new streak with a back-to-back series against National League competition. Arizona will come to Comerica Park for three before Detroit travels to Philadelphia to battle the Phillies.
Former Commanders draft pick is falling apart with no sign of recovery
The Washington Commanders' new era started with a bang. This all centered around the team's decision to select quarterback Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. The collateral damage of that decision is experiencing a different trajectory. And the signs suggest that Sam Howell is falling apart with no sign of recovery. Howell became the first Washington quarterback to start every regular-season game since Kirk Cousins in 2023. There were flashes of promise, but nothing to convince general manager Adam Peters he was worthy of another shot. When they set their stall on Daniels, the former North Carolina standout was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. Former Commanders QB Sam Howell is struggling to make an impact in Minnesota After backing up Geno Smith last season, Howell was on the move again. This time, it was the Minnesota Vikings who thought they could salvage his career, albeit in another understudy role behind J.J. McCarthy. It seemed as if the No. 2 quarterback spot was Howell's to lose heading into the offseason. But after some struggles throughout training camp, that's not as clear-cut as it once appeared. NFL analyst Thor Nystrom from Fantasy Life got to see Howell up close during the Vikings' practice on Monday. His blunt message on social media left no doubt about how he perceived the signal-caller's production. And spoiler alert, it didn't make for good reading. This is an ongoing trend. Howell isn't picking things up quickly enough, and it's showing on the field. Head coach Kevin O'Connell is an accomplished quarterback developer, but even he might have his work cut out here. Howell isn't a rookie anymore. These are more than just growing pains, so it'll be interesting to see if some live-fire reps in the preseason can turn this concerning tide. That'll be the strongest measuring stick, especially considering he threw just 14 passes in 2024. The Vikings believed enough in Howell to bring him on board. They also don't have much behind him on the depth chart, which is one thing working in his favor. But unless the consistency increases and his confidence level within O'Connell's offense grows quickly, a situation could emerge where Minnesota cuts its losses. That would place Howell firmly on the brink of NFL irrelevancy. He might be there already, but if he was deemed unworthy of even being a backup, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what comes next. Howell has to dig deep and show the correct resolve.
