After stepping away from the Octagon, Nate Diaz is now eyeing a big UFC return, with plans to face one of the promotion’s rising contenders.
Diaz last fought in the UFC back in 2022, finishing out his contract with a submission win over Tony Ferguson. It was a fitting send-off for one of the sport’s most outspoken figures.
Since leaving MMA, the Stockton native has spent time in boxing. In 2023, he went the distance with Jake Paul but came up short on the scorecards.
He also had a rematch against Jorge Masvidal last July. Now, Diaz is looking to make another move and is setting his sights on the top of the lightweight division.
Diaz still seems to have a good relationship with the UFC, which could help him find the right fight if he decides to return. In the past, it looked like a matchup with Dustin Poirier was on the cards, but it never materialised.
More recently, though, the 40-year-old has shown interest in taking on Paddy Pimblett.
Pimblett is scheduled to face Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title at UFC 324, after Ilia Topuria announced a temporary break from competition.
Asked about his next opponent in an Instagram video, Diaz said: “S—, I’m looking at Pimblett. Probably Pimblett.”
No matter what happens in that bout, it seems unlikely that Diaz would step straight into a fight with the interim champion.
Despite his popularity, Diaz has faced criticism from fans for his interest in fighting Pimblett.
“Bro never gives anyone realistic,” one fan said on social media, reflecting a broader sentiment among some sections of the fanbase.
Another added: “About as delusional as making Paddy vs Gaethje the interim title fight.”
A third fan posted: “Keep dreaming,” while another observed: “Nate always has a way of working himself into conversation.”
During his last stretch with the UFC, Diaz went 2-2, including losses to Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal.
