Ali Abdelaziz, one of the biggest managers in the MMA world, has revealed a lesser-known dynamic behind Islam Makhachev’s rise, highlighting Khabib Nurmagomedov’s role beyond the spotlight.
The former lightweight champion is a central figure in Makhachev’s preparation.
Their connection runs deeper than teammates, rooted in a shared vision shaped by Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap.
Abdelaziz’s comments now offer rare insight into how that bond operates during fight camps.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Abdelaziz explained that Khabib’s involvement is driven purely by loyalty and legacy.
“Their legacies complete each other, because this was Khabib’s father’s vision. There’s no competition between them. When Khabib comes to camp, he’s not making money, he’s not getting a percentage, he’s spending his own money just to help his brother,” the manager stated.
The revelation underlines the unique relationship between the two fighters.
Makhachev often refers to Khabib as an older brother and has already said he is open to retiring when the former lightweight champion says to.
Abdelaziz also confirmed that Makhachev is set to fight again in the summer.
The bout is expected to be against the number one contender in the division.
Jack Della Maddalena currently holds that position, but he recently lost the belt to Makhachev and is scheduled to face Carlos Prates on 2 May.
In that context, Ian Machado Garry is the strongest candidate after pushing for a title opportunity since his win over Belal Muhammad.
Michael Morales has also emerged as a potential challenger.
The final decision on Makhachev’s opponent has not yet been confirmed.
