Charles Oliveira submitted Mateusz Gamrot in round two at UFC Rio, returning back to winning ways.
Oliveira entered into the fight with plenty to prove. His aim was to put the Ilia Topuria loss at UFC 317 in June behind him, as he was knocked out. The defeat prevented him from picking up the vacant lightweight title. This performance was a much-needed boost of confidence. Oliveira started the fight on the front foot, landing teep kicks to Gamrot’s body.
Gamrot, known for his wrestling, successfully securing takedowns. However, Gamrot found himself in an omoplata attempt from Oliveira, highlighting the danger. It was clear Oliveira was gaining the edge in the grappling exchanges. The end came in round 2. Oliveira worked his way to Gamrot’s back, expertly locking in the submission, forcing Gamrot to tap out. Oliveira then called out Max Holloway, the BMF Champion, who was open to the fight.

“I’m trying to hold back the tears right now. This is all for you guys. It’s not about money, fame, status or anything. Screw it, this is Brazil. Hey [UFC executive] Hunter [Campbell], Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway, BMF — let’s make that happen,” Oliveira said
“I’m interested. We’ve been talking about this fight. Me and him have a history. He’s blaming it on some type of injury. I guess we get to figure it out now. Can you imagine? I don’t know if I want to wait that long, but we’ll see what happens. We’ll see what happens. Never say never,” Holloway stated
