It’s safe to say Aaron Pico’s long awaited UFC debut didn’t go as planned. The 28-year-old former Bellator standout was knocked out cold by Lerone Murphy in the UFC 319 co main event at Chicago’s United Center. Falling victim to a devastating spinning back elbow that is already being touted as a Knockout of the Year contender.

Pico (13-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) entered the fight with momentum, having won nine of his last 10 bouts in Bellator before the promotion was shuttered by PFL. His only recent loss had come via injury. The former blue-chip prospect was signed as one of Bellator’s brightest hopes in 2017, though his MMA debut ended in a shocking 24-second submission loss to Zach Freeman at Madison Square Garden. After a turbulent 4-3 start, Pico steadied himself, compiling highlight-reel stoppages that carried him into the UFC spotlight.

Against Murphy (17-0-1 MMA, 9-0-1 UFC), Pico faced a replacement opponent who stepped in on three weeks’ notice after Movsar Evloev withdrew. Murphy seized the moment, extending his unbeaten run and positioning himself for a featherweight title shot.

Pico Promises To Regroup

Pico on Sunday posted on social media that his health was OK and vowed the experience of the loss will make him a better fighter. “Last night wasn’t my night, that’s the fight game,” Pico posted on Instagram. “I’m grateful for my team, my family, and everyone who continues to support me. The supporters that have been there from day one and my new supporters, I see you! Thank you. Wins and losses both teach lessons and I’ll come back sharper, stronger, and better prepared. Thank you all who have sent messages and checked in, my health is well. Thanks for riding with me. My story is not over.”

He’s been here before. His MMA debut in 2017 ended in shocking fashion when he was submitted in just 24 seconds at Madison Square Garden. A huge setback given the hype around him but as an elite Bellator’s “blue-chip” prospect. But instead of folding, he regrouped and evolved his striking game. He’s definitely carved out a solid run with highlight-reel knockouts that eventually carried him into the UFC spotlight.
