Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier made weight for their final weigh-in ahead of UFC 318 on July 19.
Holloway steps into the Octagon after a knockout loss to Ilia Topuria, where he missed out on reclaiming the featherweight title. That night, the BMF belt wasn’t on the line, meaning he puts it up for grabs against Dustin. Max captured that title with a stunning last-second knockout over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.
For Poirier, UFC 318 represents the end of an incredible run. Fighting in front of his hometown crowd in Louisiana, he’s hoping to close out his career with one final statement. After a submission loss to Islam Makhachev in a lightweight title bout, Poirier made it clear he wanted just one more fight before retiring. Though he came up short in previous title shots against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and Makhachev, he now has the chance to walk away with a belt. Rapper Lil Wayne will present the winner with a belt, showing the magnitude of what is on offer. Poirier hit the scales at 156 pounds, while Holloway weighed 155 pounds.
“Poirier is my dude. I support him 100%. We send each other texts. If this is his last fight, I think he will be at his peak, he will give his absolute best. He already outboxed him before. Dustin needs to stick to his gameplan, push forward, don’t let Holloway work his range. He is one of the best at it. I think it’s going to be Poirier via decision. Both of them are hard to finish. Both of them can take a punch. Neither of them have a very powerful knockout punch, but they hit accurately. Both work more in the stand-up. I think it will be technical. Who will outplay who,” Islam Makhachev said
“Dustin Poirier will, for the third time, beat Max Holloway. That is my official prediction. “It is not a commentary at all on Max’s skills. It is the fact that they’ve fought not once, but twice. There is no point in (the first two fights) where you can identify something…there was nothing to lead a trained eye to believe if you do this again, you’re going to have a different outcome,” Chael Sonnen said
