As reported by Athlon Sports, athletes prepare themselves to battle in combat sports how they see fit.
To address the issue of illegal activity, there has to be continuous enforcement and a sense of honor and fairness to uphold in the combat sporting world.
Following UFC 313, allegations of cheating have surfaced in the light heavyweight championship bout between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira.
In a recent interview with a Russian podcast, Ushatayka, Ankalaev’s coach Sukhrab Magomedov accused Pereira of “greasing” during the fight, even though Ankalaev claimed the victory by unanimous decision.
In Magomedov’s claim, he says that when Ankalaev pressed Pereira against the fence, it appeared Pereira had a substance on his body.
Magomedov backs up his claim by saying that Pereira’s sweat was not normal, it gelled up, suggesting that there was an ointment or something of the sort on the body.
In the interview, Magomedov made further claims that Ankalaev told him that Pereira felt sticky and emitted an odor reminiscent of ointment.
Despite the allegations, there has been no evidence that Pereira greased.
The UFC or anyone from Pereira’s team have yet to issue a statement on the accusations.
The excessive use of grease or any other foreign substance to make one’s self slippery is explicitly prohibited in the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts (the ruleset used by the UFC), as it can prevent fair grappling exchanges and significantly alter the outcome of a fight.
