Retired Jon Jones Goes on ‘Hunt’ Mode, Gives First Statement After Re-Entering UFC Testing Pool

Jon Jones could be hunting to snag back what was his. The irony is, even if it’s a tease from ‘Bones’, this could very well lead to a crossroads with now-undisputed UFC 265-pound champion, Tom Aspinall. The Manchester native remained the interim title holder for close to 600 days before finally being upgraded to undisputed status after Dana White announced Jones’ retirement at the UFC Baku presser.

Many die-hard fans even blasted Bones in full force for ducking the dangerous Aspinall. Jones previously demanded for “f*ck you” money to clash against the 31-year-old which was in the neighbourhood of $30 million. Ariel Helwani later reported that Jones and the UFC eventually came to an agreement, but the consensus MMA GOAT went back on his word and refused to fight the Englishman yet again. Now that he has moved on and gotten what he wanted, Jones is once again teasing a return.

Two weeks after his retirement was announced at the UFC Baku presser, the Jackson’s Team Acoma fighter said he is entering the UFC drug testing pool again. The former 205lbs kingpin would once again be able to compete when cleared for the ballot in about six months by commission officials, and Jones teased he wanted to “keep everyone’s options open.” Does he, though? Jones’ recent cryptic tweet hints that he’s enjoying his newfound role and freedom.

It feels nice to be the hunter and not the hunted for once.

Coming back to Jones’ retirement and the bout with Aspinall, former rival and ex-UFC 205-pounder/ESPN post-fight table analyst Anthony Smith considered that Jones was stalling the fight as much as he could. Leon Edwards thought that the fighter was waiting for a more stretched-out PPV compensatory amount and was half-expecting him to come out of retirement.

UFC head honcho Dana White confirmed Helwani’s claims and told UFC Execs were down with the finances Bones was pitching, but he took a U-turn out of the matchup. On somewhat a similar stem, his former arch-nemesis, Daniel Cormier, and Tom Aspinall thought that he would come out of the woodwork yet again when the talks of unification die down.

This is no profound tease or signal from Jones that he’s coming back. After his UFC 309 heavyweight title defense, he even told the media he won’t do any business with the then-interim champion. Jones instead namedropped Alex Pereira as a more suitable matchup. So, for now, this could be the former champ just enjoying himself a little too much. The thing is, this isn’t where the buck ends.

A USA versus UK Scrapper at the White House? Jon Jones reacts

When there’s one ‘Jon Jones’ tweet, there’s usually a few more tweets in his commentary spree or joy ride. Other than those like Aspinall himself or Aljamain Sterling, Jones maintains an active commentary with peers and fans. Most of his online activity, though, proves one aspect: the biggest UFC/MMA gloater of Jones is the man himself.

ESPN’s ‘Good Guy / Bad Guy’ podcast co-hosts Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, along with Matt BrownMichael Bisping, have iterated from time to time how ‘Jon Jones’ isn’t that big when it comes to being a brand. For that part, he isn’t that big of a PPV royalty merch drawer either.

Those honors have largely gone to Conor McGregor, and Bones knows that. Jones is certainly not thinking about himself or about upping his legacy. Right now, the former 265-pound kingpin could be ready for star-spangled glory and a White House PPV concept super-card that the 47th President, Donald Trump, recently floated!

Jones already said yes to that, even if public forums and X/IG users are flooding in requests for a Jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight in 2026. Bisping recently reiterated it would make all the sense too: Trump wants an American spectacle for the America 250 Celebration. The America vs. UK fanfare super fight fits into the template of the treaty signing for ‘independence,’ bringing clarity to the founding fathers exiting the monarch’s rule of King George III.

A recently doctored AI imagery has Jones on the fence, celebrating after his UFC 309 title defense win, but in American-design shorts. Aspinall is face down on the mat, also with thematic UK custom shorts. Moreover, Bones liked the post and commented, “I like this.”

Now that he’s retired from active competition, the former champ no longer has a target on his back. So, Jones is riling up all the ammo with indefinite teases and the commentary that he’d win a now-defunct superfight. However, only time will tell if it were to ever take a shape or form.
