David Martinez didn’t hear no bell at Noche UFC.
Closing out this year’s Noche UFC is a five-round main event between featherweight contenders Diego Lopes and Jean Silva. The Brazilians headline Mexican Independence Day weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
In the co-main event, Mexico’s former Combate Global Champion David Martinez met perennial bantamweight contender Rob Font in just his second UFC fight.
Martinez is a relatively new name to the UFC roster, having won his promotional debut by TKO at UFC Mexico City in March. The 27-year-old once won three fights in one night a few years ago. Martinez also works as an orthopedic surgeon.
Font is one of the best boxers in the division and has the second most knockdowns in UFC bantamweight history (6). Font has consistently fought the best fighters in the world, including a number of former world champions.
Martinez improved to 13-1 at Noche UFC in a battle between Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Martinez fires a volume of kicks on Font in the opening round.
Font has a difficult time closing the distance on Martinez, who’s constantly on the move.
Martinez landed a clean right hand and outlanded Martinez on strikes 3-to-1 in round 1.
Font fought a better second round as he attempted to clinch with Martinez twice in the second round, but not to much avail. Martinez stunned Font with strikes shortly after right before Font pressed him against the fence. Font did find some success on the feet himself.
Martinez tried to take Font’s head off in the first 30 seconds of round 3, but Font ate his shots well.
Martinez opens up a welt on the side of Font’s head, near his eye.
In the closing seconds of the fight, Font went for a takedown as Martinez continued to pour on punches, even after the bell had sounded.
It appeared Martinez and the referee didn’t hear the bell, with the fighters being separated five seconds after the horn sounded. Martinez landed around 15 punches on Font post-fight.

Martinez won by unanimous decision, cracking the top 10 rankings in his second UFC fight.
Martinez is part of the only brother-sister duo in the UFC.
David is one year younger than his sister, Melissa, who went 1-2 in the Octagon.
‘Super Mely’ Martinez announced her retirement a few days before Martinez’s fight. She retired at 28 years old and admitted that fighting in the UFC is no longer her passion.
The retirement decision comes after a head kick KO loss in her last fight against Fatima Kline.
Melissa Martinez was in her brother’s corner for the biggest win of his career in San Antonio.
