After a second straight setback against Merab Dvalishvili, former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley is reverting to his old ways.
O’Malley made the walk at Newark’s Prudential Center in early June with redemption and a return to the 135-pound throne in his sights, nine months on from the end of his reign at the Sphere.
But ‘Suga’ failed in that goal, with Merab Dvalishvili submitting O’Malley at UFC 316 to make it two wins from two against the Montana native for the reigning bantamweight champion.
Having put all his attention on the rematch with Dvalishvili, O’Malley is now spreading his efforts away from the cage again.
After recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum and targeting the rematch against Dvalishvili, O’Malley made a number of lifestyle changes to boost his chances of revenge.
In addition to stopping smoking marijuana, ‘Suga’ came off social media, where he had been incredibly active with content creation since rising to stardom on MMA’s biggest stage.
That ultimately didn’t pay dividends when it came to his performance in the Octagon but O’Malley does claim that it still “rejuvenated” him. And with that in mind, the 30-year-old is back.
“Alright guys, last six months I have been completely off social media,” O’Malley said in a video on his Instagram Stories. “I was not really creating a lot of content.
“But I feel rejuvenated. I feel like I am excited to create content again. So we are gonna be posting a lot of content. I’ve got a new business coming out.
“I am excited to get the creative juices going,” O’Malley added.

O’Malley’s latest setback has left him without a win in over a year and likely facing a long road back to another shot at regaining the bantamweight gold.
But his coach, Tim Welch, is not worried.
While some have suggested that O’Malley’s stock as one of the UFC’s leading stars took a hit in Newark, Welch dismissed that notion during an episode of his Red Hawk Recap podcast.
The prominent trainer pointed to the likes of Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal, who amassed plenty of defeats on their UFC records but remained major names.
“Look at Nate Diaz, how big of a star he is. How many losses does he have?” Welch said. “Jorge Masvidal, how many losses does he have? They’re still just f—- huge draws. Huge stars.”
