Sean Strickland has been called out by Nassourdine Imavov in a fiery self-made promotional video for a potential rematch.
Dagestan-born Imavov could very easily make the argument that Strickland skipped him in the queue for a shot at Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 328. Now that he is middleweight champion, it appears that once he recovers from his injuries he should have to face Imavov.
Imavov faced Strickland in a short-notice bout three years ago, losing a decision that sent the American on a run towards his first belt. Since then, he has gone on a relatively quiet run of wins including a brutal knockout of former champion Israel Adesanya and a win over Caio Borralho to become top contender.
On Sunday evening, Nassourdine Imavov released a sketch in which he appears to meet with a therapist to discuss his obsession over a world title shot. The doctor attempts to ask him questions about his treatment, but he seems more interested in texting on his phone.
It is revealed that he is repeatedly sending DMs to Sean Strickland, in which he writes messages like “Don’t be afraid little coward,” “You know what will happen,” and “Death is coming”. He also insists that Strickland will never have a ‘happy ending’, and that he “Will never be the same” after their rematch.
It’s a well put together hype package from Imavov, who does have the best case in the division for a title fight. However, one would wonder why he didn’t do all of the things he threatens in the video during their five rounds against each other back in 2023.
Their initial meeting was a short-notice one, with Strickland taking the call on the week of the fight. This did mean that they had to compete at light-heavyweight as the future two-time champion was unable to make middleweight on such short notice.
