Chael Sonnen is running for President after announcing his 2028 presidential campaign, revealing he is already in the early stages of assembling his cabinet.
"I am at the beginning phases of putting my cabinet together," Sonnen
Whether the announcement should be taken at face value is a question Sonnen's entire public career has made difficult to answer cleanly.
His political history adds a layer of complexity. In 2010, Sonnen ran unopposed in the Republican primary for the Oregon House of Representatives, secured the nomination, and was then forced to step aside after his 2006 federal money laundering conviction came to light.
A presidential run requires navigating the same kind of background scrutiny that ended his Oregon campaign, at a considerably higher level of intensity. Federal conviction records do not become more forgiving when the office being sought is the highest in the country.
None of that has historically stopped Sonnen from making the declaration. The cabinet announcement, the formal framing, the 2028 timeline — it all has the shape of something genuine rather than a bit. 2028 is two years away.
