Things we learned from UFC Vegas 110 as Dana White has a lot to answer for following more controversy

Despite the quality of the UFC Vegas 110 card, there are several things to take away from the evening.

On Saturday, the premier promotion returned to the Apex for UFC Vegas 110, headlined by featherweight hopefuls Steve Garcia and David Onama.

However, after the nights action, it is once again the continuous controversy that has stolen the headlines, after the event was once again full of issues.

Garcia went on to score a first round finish over Onama, putting his name firmly on the map at 145lbs, a division which is crying out for new contenders.

The eye poke epidemic is going nowhere Dana White

Last week’s UFC 321 event was plagued by an eye poke after the main event was cut short in the first round after Ciryl Gane ‘accidentally’ poked Tom Aspinall in the eye resulting in a no contest.

And following that event, UFC boss Dana White provided an extremely worrying reaction to the events, asking ‘who cares?’ when he was questioned about the severity of eye pokes.

Over the years, White has always had the same energy about eye pokes, claiming ‘they are a part of the sport’, making no attempt to actually improve the issue.

That was until he was left with no choice and decided to test a new glove design in the UFC. Despite that, he quickly reverted back to the old (current) design after Jon Jones complained about the size and design of the new glove.

If UFC Vegas 110 taught us and White anything, it is that the epidemic of eye pokes is going absolutely nowhere, and if anything, it is getting worse because of the lack of punishment around it.

The officiating in the UFC may be getting worse

Not only was the event plagued by eye pokes again, but aside from that, it was also full of its controversial officiating moments, as per usual.

In the featured prelim bout of the night, Billy Elekana took on Kevin Christian, who was debuting in the premier promotion.

After being dropped by Elekana early on in the fight, the Brazilian somehow managed to stay in the fight, but not for too long.

Elekana subsequently took the back of Christian and sunk in a rear-naked choke. Christian went on to tap from the submission, but Chris Tognoni didn’t see it and let the fight continue.

After several more seconds of Elekana putting on the squeeze, Christian went to sleep and Tognoni finally opened his eyes and stopped the fight.

The women’s bantamweight division is in dire need of something

Buried near the bottom of the prelims was a women’s bantamweight fight between Ketlen Vieira and Norma Dumont, two of only six ranked fighters on the entire card.

The most concerning part of this fight, was that the winner would likely put themselves in position for a potential title shot against current champion, Kayla Harrison.

Talks are ongoing whether Harrison will defend her belt against Amanda Nunes in a huge comeback fight, with both fighters targeting the White House event next year.

And if last night showed us anything about the women’s 135lb division, it is that its in desperate need of something to spice it up a little bit.

Earlier this week, former PFL women’s lightweight champion Larissa Pacheco called for the UFC to re-sign her, and that would certainly add something to a division that is crying out for contenders.

Pacheco and Harrison have fought each other three times before, with the Brazilian getting the bragging rights in their most recent meeting in 2022, handing Harrison her first career loss.
