Tom Aspinall admits he’d ‘definitely lose’ if he fought former UFC heavyweight champion in his peak

Tom Aspinall has looked unbeatable since joining the UFC in 2020

The UFC heavyweight champion has stopped eight opponents inside two rounds to claim MMA’s greatest prize.

Tom Aspinall‘s lone loss in the Octagon came when he suffered a freak knee injury in the opening seconds of his first fight with Curtis Blaydes, whom he knocked out in 60 seconds when they rematched in July 2024.

At this point, fans are wondering what it will take to stop Aspinall’s incredible run, which the man himself says would be over if he ran into a former UFC heavyweight champion during his peak years.

Tom Aspinall thinks he’d lose against ‘peak’ Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier won UFC titles in two different weight classes during his Hall of Fame career.

‘DC’ combined elite-level wrestling with serious punching power to become an all-time great.

Those abilities, combined with his smaller stature compared to most heavyweights, would make him a nightmare opponent for today’s top heavyweight.

“Yeah,” Aspinall replied when asked if there’s any fighter, past or present, he thinks he’d definitely lose against if they fought.

“You know, ‘DC’, Daniel Cormier? Peak ‘DC’ has the worst style for me ever.

“I’ve said this to his face as well. He’s a short guy who just keeps walking forward, changing levels in between grappling and punches. He can knock you out, take you down, and he’s got cardio for days.

“For my style, he’s a nightmare… Ah, he was a beast. Peak ‘DC’ was unreal.”

Tom Aspinall’s next fight

Tom Aspinall will defend his undisputed heavyweight championship for the first time later this month.

The 32-year-old is set to square off against Ciryl Gane in the main event of UFC 321 on October 25.

Aspinall believes Gane has worked on ‘holes in his ground game’ and could try to take him down when they clash in Abu Dhabi.

“It’s an MMA fight, so anything can happen,” Aspinall told Bloody Elbow last month.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to take me down. It’s MMA, so I’m preparing for everything.

“I work with really high-level guys in all aspects. I’m comfortable anywhere and I’ll take the path of least resistance, however that looks on the night.

“We’ve seen that Ciryl has holes in his ground game, but he’s improved. Stuff like that gives you an opportunity to improve. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get in a lot of grappling exchanges this time, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a straight-up standup fight either.

“You’ve gotta be ready for anything in MMA, and I’m preparing for everything.”
