Tom Aspinall will hope to send Ciryl Gane to the same fate as he did the Frenchman’s teammate five years ago.

After a thrilling UFC 320 event in Las Vegas this past Saturday, the promotion’s next business on pay-per-view comes later in October when the Octagon returns to Abu Dhabi.

Having been elevated to undisputed heavyweight champion status following Jon Jones’ retirement, Aspinall will defend the title against Gane in the UFC 321 main event.

While this fight has been a long time coming, it won’t be the first instance of the prominent English and French teams preparing to battle one another. And the first on this day, October 10, in 2020 was a resounding victory for Aspinall’s camp…

Tom Aspinall battered Alan Baudot with ground strikes on UFC’s ‘Fight Island’

After Aspinall’s 45-second UFC debut win in July 2020, the Manchester native returned to ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi three months later for his sophomore Octagon appearance.

The then-future champion shared the cage with Alan Baudot, a teammate of Gane’s at MMA Factory in Paris.

Baudot was making his debut as an 8-1 prospect, but his number of losses in the cage was quickly doubled courtesy of some ferocious work from Aspinall.

After rocking his French opponent with powerful shots on the feet, Aspinall finished Baudot with brutal ground strikes after taking him down with ease.

The finish came just 95 seconds into the fight and extended the Briton’s streak of consecutive first-round victories to five.

Alan Baudot hasn’t fought since 2022 but was Ciryl Gane’s main training partner for Jon Jones

Baudot would go on to lose his other three UFC fights, with one later being overturned to a no contest. He has not fought since a TKO loss to Josh Parisian in 2022 marked his last fight before being released.

But the Frenchman remained a prominent part of the MMA Factory team and reportedly served a key role in Gane’s preparation to face Jon Jones in 2023.

During promotional material ahead of UFC 285, Jones suggested that his heavyweight debut opponent was beating up “lesser” fighters in training. The Rochester native trained with Maurice Greene, Yorgan De Castro, and Walt Harris.

Jones quickly submitted Gane come fight night, and that came after many fans had questioned the Frenchman’s choice of training partner for the major assignment in the comments section of a video showing ‘Bon Gamin’ sparring with Baudot.

“I think that if Ciryl is serious about being champion he must leave the MMA factory.”

“Training with Baudot, who does not have the level to train against Jones.”

“Alan Baudot’s style has nothing to do with Jones. I’m afraid for Gane.”

“He’s really training against Alan for this fight? He’s really not going to be ready for Jones.”
