UFC 319 Main Card Makes History with Back-to-Back Spinning Elbow KOs (Video)

The spinning elbow is one of the most devastating and cinematic techniques in combat sports, a strike immortalized in Muay Thai by legends like Samson Isaan and Yodsanklai Fairtex. However, it wasn’t until 2014 that the UFC saw its first spinning elbow knockout, courtesy of South Korea’s Kim Dong Hyun, who flattened John Hathaway in a stunning display of speed and precision.

Nearly a decade later, UFC 319 made history by delivering back-to-back spinning elbow finishes on the same main card.

Two fights before the main event, Carlos Prates crushed Geoff Neal with the technique, while Lerone Murphy shut the lights out on Aaron Pico in the co-main event.

It’s a rare occurrence for two potential “Knockout of the Year” candidates to be on the same card, and it’s even more rare for these finishes to happen in back-to-back fights via the exact same technique.

The first jaw-dropping finish came in the welterweight clash between Prates and Geoff Neal. After a back-and-forth opening round, Prates unleashed a spinning back elbow with one second left.

The strike was so vicious that commentator Joe Rogan dubbed it “horrific,” while Dana White immediately awarded Prates a $50K bonus and a spot on UFC’s upcoming Brazil card.

The co-main had England’s Lerone Murphy face Bellator crossover star Aaron Pico. After surviving early adversity, including suffering a knockdown, Murphy timed a spinning elbow counter as Pico lunged forward.

This knockout extended Murphy’s unbeaten streak to 18 fights and spoiled Pico’s UFC debut in devastating fashion. It also convinced Dana White to award him a $50K bonus as well.

Both fighters’ stocks skyrocketed in their respective divisions. Prates, coming off a decision loss against Ian Garry, bounces back in the win column, while Murphy, who is riding an impressive win streak, finally scored a finish in the Octagon that has eluded him since 2021.
