Henry Cejudo once proposed a champion vs champion fight — with a twist.
‘Triple C’ marks one of the prominent names set to close out the UFC’s pay-per-view era this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The former bantamweight and flyweight champion will return on the main card of UFC 323. Cejudo’s fight with Payton Talbott is among the intriguing matchups that will set the stage for two title fights at the top of the lineup.
Cejudo is set to retire at UFC 323, as he brings an illustrious career to an end. Having won an Olympic gold medal and achieved the rare feat of becoming a simultaneous two-division champion on MMA’s biggest stage, the 38-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest combat sports athletes ever.
But despite all that he has accomplished, there was one bizarre accolade that Cejudo was not able to add to his résumé…

In August 2019, Cejudo had recently knocked out Marlon Moraes to add the bantamweight title to a trophy cabinet that already included the flyweight belt.
The 2008 Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling was in his peak ‘King of Cringe’ era, and that brought about a bizarre callout of a fellow titleholder.
Cejudo caused a stir by challenging Valentina Shevchenko in a video on social media after the flyweight queen’s successful title defense against Liz Carmouche at UFC Montevideo.
“So I’m out here enjoying my beautiful Sunday in beautiful Las Vegas, but my phone just keeps blowing up that somebody by the name of Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko is the most dominant champion in the world,” Cejudo said.
“And you know what? I get a little jelly because she has gold and I want that gold. Valentina Shevchenko, I have a message for you.
“I am looking to become the first-ever intergender champion that this world has ever seen. I’m calling you out. You can be the next to bend the knee to ‘Triple C’,” he added.
Shevchenko responded during an interview with Ariel Helwani and had an ominous warning for her flyweight counterpart.
“Right now I have two opponents in my mind for the next title defense,” Shevchenko said. “First it’s Katlyn Chookagian, and the second one is Henry Cejudo.
“I saw (Cejudo’s video). And you know, I can say be careful what you wish (for) because he’s all gold hunter but I can make it happen that he will lose all his gold forever!
“I’m not afraid of anything. I told after my fight that I wait everyone inside the Octagon,” she added.
It did not take long for Dana White to catch wind of Cejudo’s bizarre challenge, and it’s safe to say that the UFC president was not behind it.
White reacted to Cejudo’s intergender callout during a press conference after an episode of the Contender Series.
“That’s the wackiest s— I’ve ever heard,” White told reporters.
“It’s just f—- crazy that Henry would say that. But Valentina would probably do it. I don’t even know how to respond to that or what to say other than ‘wow’.
“I can’t even f—- wrap my brain around that, why he would say that,” he continued. “It’s just crazy, but…what are you gonna do?”
