Interim Title Controversy

The decision to book this specific interim title fight has sparked debate. Arman Tsarukyan, the division's top-ranked contender, was passed over.

In a recent interview with Complex, UFC CEO Dana White explained his reasoning for skipping over Tsarukyan:

“Tsaruykyan has gotta work his way back up there. Tsarukyan has had his opportunity. He didn’t take it,” White said. “I have to be able to count on somebody if somebody’s going to be fighting for a world championship.”

White also mentioned Tsarukyan’s volatility played a role in the decision, citing his headbutt of Dan Hooker before their fight (clip courtesy of The Mac Life):

Fight Breakdown

Justin Gaethje enters the Octagon fueled by a desire to inflict damage.

"I can’t wait to f— this kid up, honestly. I’ve been telling myself he’s gonna hurt me so that I go to the most primal place that I can, and when I go to that place, I’m one of the most dangerous in the world," Gaethje told ESPN MMA’s Jeff Wagenheim:

The former interim champion views this as another chance to cement his legacy as one of the sport's most exciting fighters.

Paddy Pimblett, riding a seven-fight UFC win streak, sees this as his destined arrival at the top. "The Baddy" has silenced doubters thus far and now has the chance to claim gold on the sport's biggest stage.

A win would set up a massive unification bout with Topuria or a first title defense against a hungry challenger like Tsarukyan.

UFC 324 is the beginning of a new broadcast chapter and a pivotal moment for the future of the lightweight division. Will Gaethje's relentless pressure prove too much, or will Pimblett's momentum carry him to championship glory? The answers come live from Las Vegas this Saturday night.
