Two of the UFC’s most dangerous finishers collide in a thrilling short-notice matchup as Vicente Luque welcomes Joel Alvarez to the welterweight division.
Luque’s (23-11-1) experience at 170-pounds cannot be overstated. He’s battled the elite of the division over the years against fighters like Belal Muhammad, Stephen Thompson, and Tyron Woodley, and he’s consistently proven his resilience and adaptability.
Alvarez (22-3) makes his welterweight debut after an impressive run at lightweight, where he showcased slick submission skills and dangerous long-range striking. However, it remains to be seen how those tools will translate up a weight class.
Vicente Luque – Odds 4.50
Record: 23-11-1
Age: 33
Height: 5ft11
Reach: 75”
Weight: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Joel Alvarez – Odds 1.20
Record: 22-3
Age: 32
Height: 6ft3
Reach: 77”
Weight: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
The Brazilian’s signature pressure, heavy low kicks, and sharp combination striking are tailor-made to disrupt Alvarez’s rhythm and chip away at his reach advantage early.
While Alvarez thrives on early aggression and finishing ability, Luque’s iron chin and composure under fire make him one of the toughest fighters to overwhelm. If Alvarez can’t secure an early finish, expect Luque to drag him into deep waters, where his counterpunching and body work begin to break opponents down.
The question remains to be answered as to whether or not Alvarez can eat shots at welterweight the same way he did down at lightweight. And I’m sure Luque will be fully set on testing this resistance in the opening minutes.
On the mat, Alvarez boasts a dangerous submission arsenal with 16 of his 21 wins coming by tapout, but Luque’s defensive grappling and submission game make him a nightmare to control and it’s difficult to see Alvarez getting the better of him in these situations.
A couple of years ago, Luque’s combination of durability, experience, and power would’ve given him the edge in this one. But with just two wins in his last five bouts, perhaps the exciting wars he’s been in are now beginning to catch up with his body.
While Alvarez is only a year younger, it’s clear to see who the fresher fighter is in this matchup. Add to that his clear physicality advantage, the bookies are correct in having Luque as a huge underdog even despite him having home advantage fighting in front of his Brazilian fans.
I do think we’ll be able to tell quite early on who the fresher fighter is. Alvarez will start fast and will hunt the finish, especially if he can eat Luque’s power without any trouble. My pick is Joel Alvarez to win by KO/TKO at odds of 2.50.
