On Saturday, UFC president Dana White announced that former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones had officially retired, then just hours later, news broke that Jones was facing charges stemming from a troubling incident in New Mexico.
A report by the Albuquerque Journal says that Jones allegedly fled the scene of an accident, leaving behind a woman who was “exhibiting signs of significant intoxication and lacking clothing from the waist down.” The woman claims she was with Jones, drinking and doing mushrooms, and he was driving the car. The police claim they spoke to someone on the phone who identified himself as Jones and he “appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties.”
Jones tweeted after the news broke, "Keep in mind, even the media can get it wrong sometimes if they don’t have all the facts. Don’t believe everything you read online."
Many fighters reacted to the retirement news and didn't acknowledge the controversy surrounding it.
Just thank you for being a huge inspiration throughout your career. Technique, movement, creativity, brutal dominance and always being yourself, whether in or out of the cage.

I Wish you all the best ⚡️⚡️ https://t.co/mW33SUj0DF
The UFC lawsuit money might have helped nudge Jon Jones into this decision. He’s likely going to make about 50% of what he made from throughout most of his career. Fight the toughest guy in the world for a huge amount. OR receive possibly more and not even have to fight.

Jon Jones retired and there isn’t anything massive put together for his announcement? Just a post fight 3 second clip of Dana annoying it….Seems like he’ll be back to me. #UFCBaku

Now, lets make the only fight who make sense! Aspinall vs Almeida for undisputed HW title of the world

No UFC fighters commented on Twitter about the controversial charges, but plenty of UFC fans weighed in on them, and the timing of the retirement.

Jon Jones retiring while at the same time facing criminal charges is so on brand for Jon. His greatest opponent will forever be hisself.

Amazing news about Jon Jones retiring. Too bad it's a blatant, obvious attempt at flooding the zone to obscure the new charges against him. He fled from a late night crash AGAIN, ditching a woman who was Donald Ducking, then threatened to have a police employee killed by shooters

What a career for Jon Jones. We will probably never see another wife battering homosexual cocaine addict become a UFC champion again.
