On Saturday, UFC president Dana White announced that former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones had officially retired, then just hours later, news broke that Jones was facing charges stemming from a troubling incident in New Mexico.

A report by the Albuquerque Journal says that Jones allegedly fled the scene of an accident, leaving behind a woman who was “exhibiting signs of significant intoxication and lacking clothing from the waist down.” The woman claims she was with Jones, drinking and doing mushrooms, and he was driving the car. The police claim they spoke to someone on the phone who identified himself as Jones and he “appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties.”

Jones tweeted after the news broke, "Keep in mind, even the media can get it wrong sometimes if they don’t have all the facts. Don’t believe everything you read online."

Many fighters reacted to the retirement news and didn't acknowledge the controversy surrounding it.

Some used the moment to call for a fight with Tom Aspinall who is now the undisputed champion.

No UFC fighters commented on Twitter about the controversial charges, but plenty of UFC fans weighed in on them, and the timing of the retirement.
