Jon Jones has once more come under fire for his apparent reluctance to share the Octagon with Tom Aspinall.
Playing fast and loose with his summer retirement from mixed martial arts, Jon Jones stunned the community earlier this year, confirming his retirement from combat sports.
As a result, the former pound-for-pound number one lost his heavyweight crown, with Tom Aspinall already booking his first defense against common foe Ciryl Gane next month in the Middle East.
However, given his alleged avoidance of a title unification bout with Aspinall, Jones has come under fire from a fellow Octagon legend for his final walk to the cage.
Himself forced into retirement amid a slew of recurring injuries, former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is the latest star to pick apart the retirement of Rochester star Jones.
And less than complimentary on Jones’ fiasco with British favorite Aspinall, former titleholder Cruz pointed to Jones’ final appearance in the promotion.
As far as Cruz is concerned, Jones elected to face Stipe Miocic, whom he labeled a “full-time firefighter” rather than put his legacy on the line against the surging Aspinall.
“Let’s talk about how Stipe (Miocic) was a full-time firefighter before he fought Jon Jones,” Cruz said on the Mighty YouTube channel. “That’s my point, who’s talking about that?
“Think about that. He (Jon Jones) came back and fought a full-time firefighter,” Cruz explained. “He didn’t come back and fight Tom Aspinall, who is sitting in the gym staring at Jon Jones tape every second of every day. It’s a different thing.
“I’m not hating, but it’s the truth. It’s true.”
Linked with an eventual title showdown with former interim champion Aspinall in the final years of his career, Jones never shared the Octagon with the newly-minted undisputed gold holder.
And failing to ever give credence to claims he was interested in fighting the Atherton megastar, Jones is alleged to have rejected an approach from Saudi Arabia to clash with the promotional unbeaten star.

“My information is that he gave the UFC a number, he gave them a price tag, he said, ‘I’ll do it for this number.’ I believe it’s in the $30 million range,” Ariel Helwani told IMPAULSIVE recently.
“…I believe that Saudi Arabia was involved, the big dogs were involved, they came up with the number.”
