Brandon Royval has updated fans on the injury he sustained during his hard-fought victory in a UFC rematch with Brandon Moreno last weekend.

Last Saturday’s UFC Fight Night event was originally supposed to be headlined by Moreno taking on top contender Amir Albazi, but when Albazi withdrew with an injury it allowed Royval to step up and try to avenge a previous loss to the former flyweight champion.

“Raw Dawg” did manage to best Royval via split decision when the two met in Mexico City but had to overcome some serious adversity, and now the 31-year-old claims that the knee injury he sustained early on in the fight appears to be an MCL tear.

Royval saw his first fight with Moreno end in disappointment due to a shoulder injury at the end of the opening round, but at the very least the former title challenger was able to get his hand raised in the rematch even after he was severely compromised early on.

Alexandre Pantoja won the flyweight belt from Moreno at UFC 290 before he defended it against Royval at UFC 296, and while “Raw Dawg” is now firmly back in the division’s title picture it looks as if his knee injury may keep him sidelined for an extended period.

Plenty of fans would also like to see Royval and Moreno square off in a trilogy bout at some point down the line, although perhaps the UFC might avoid booking that third fight in front of a Mexico City crowd that was rooting heavily for "The Assassin Baby” in the final bout of a card that was stacked with Mexican talent.
