The UFC's men's featherweight division is poised for significant changes as UFC 314 approaches this weekend. Following Ilia Topuria's decision to vacate the featherweight title to move up to lightweight, a bout between former champion Alexander Volkanovski and rising contender Diego Lopes has been scheduled to determine the new champion. Additionally, the event features the UFC debut of former Bellator champion Patricio "Pitbull" Freire against Yair Rodriguez, adding further intrigue to the division. Now, the UFC has just shaken up the featherweight division again.

Former Bellator and PFL standout Aaron Pico has officially signed with the UFC per ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto, marking a pivotal moment in the 28-year-old featherweight’s career.

Widely regarded as one of MMA’s most explosive prospects, Pico brings a 13-4 record and a reputation for brutal knockouts to the promotion. His signing follows months of speculation after his PFL contract expired, with UFC President Dana White confirming in a press conference earlier this year that he was interested in bringing Pico over to their promotion.

Initial reports of a debut against #4-ranked Movsar Evloev on May 17 for UFC Vegas 106 were swiftly debunked by Evloev’s team. According to the latest report by Russian MMA outlet Red Fury MMA, Evloev’s team stated that he will wait for the outcome of Alexander Volkanovski vs. Diego Lopes this weekend at UFC 314.

Despite Pico’s setbacks against top Bellator competition, including losses to Henry Corrales and Ádám Borics, his recent three-fight win streak—highlighted by a revenge KO over Corrales—proved his readiness for the UFC stage. His signing aligns with the UFC’s strategy to absorb top talent from dissolved promotions like Bellator, following Patricio Pitbull’s recent signing.

Pico’s confidence in his wrestling remains unshaken. During an interview with MMA Junkie back in February, he claimed his grappling is “a lot better” than Evloev’s, citing extensive film study. This self-assurance will be critical in a division teeming with versatile strikers and submission artists. However, Pico’s past struggles against savvy grapplers like Zach Freeman might indicate that he could be slightly overestimating his UFC readiness.

The featherweight division is in flux. Volkanovski vs. Lopes at UFC 314 could reshape the rankings, while Evloev lingers as a dark horse. Pico’s debut—whenever it occurs—could inject even more chaos into the title picture. Whether he faces a ranked veteran or a fellow newcomer, his explosive style will guarantee fireworks.
