Kennedy Nzechukwu went viral for all the wrong reasons on Saturday. The heavyweight was knocked out cold by Shamil Gaziev in just 80 seconds. The time of the KO wasn’t the source of the virality. It was what Nzechukwu was doing when he was knocked out that was undeniably hilarious. Let’s talk MMA.

What Nzechukwu was doing when the punch landed |
The UFC billed this prelim as heavyweight finishers colliding, and the promotion’s own highlight reel calls it a first-round knockout.
Your technical read is the part worth keeping. Fighting with the hands low is a real counter-punching approach, and it works right up until the distance is wrong once. Against a heavyweight who finishes, once is the whole margin.
Take a look at this shot which focuses solely on Nzechukwu. It’s tough not to chuckle.
@actuallylikethat At UFC Sacramento on August 22, 2026, heavyweight slugger Shamil Gaziev dramatically snapped his two-fight skid by knocking out Kennedy Nzechukwu cold just 1 minute and 20 seconds into the first round. Nzechukwu entered the Octagon relying on his speed and a risky, low-hands defensive posture. Gaziev quickly adjusted his range, cut off the cage, and uncorked a devastating straight right hand that landed flush on Nzechukwu’s chin, instantly rendering him unconscious for a definitive walk-off finish. #ufc #ufcsacramrento #ufc_mma_sport #mma #mmatok

Nzechukwu severely misjudged distance and his own reflexes. He was attempting to fight with his hands down. Nzechukwu was likely looking to counter Gaziev’s punches and sometimes, a fighter with lower hands can fire from angles their opponent does not see. The thing is, when you do that, your defensive reflexes need to be on point and you must have an excellent handle on the distance judgment. That didn’t happen here.
