Two fighters fought to keep their careers alive at UFC Rio.
The UFC returns to Rio de Janeiro for a UFC Fight Night event headlined by Charles Oliveira.
The beloved former UFC Lightweight Champion looks to bounce back from a title fight loss to Ilia Topuria with a win over Mateusz Gamrot in the UFC Rio headliner.
Brazilian bantamweights kicked off Oliveira’s undercard as Luan Lacerda fought Saimon Oliveira, who missed weight by 8 lbs on Friday morning.
According to Guilherme Cruz, Oliveira was fined 50% of his purse and the fight stayed intact for Saturday night.
Both fighters had a combined 0-5 record in the UFC heading into the matchup, with Lacerda being the one to finally get his hand raised.
Lacerda didn’t let Oliveira’s 8 lb weight miss get in the way of him executing his game plan.
Lacerda dominated Oliveira everywhere the fight went across two rounds, controlling him on the ground.
In the second round, Lacerda rolled into an armbar and forced Oliveira to tap verbally, yelling while in the submission before the referee put a stop to the contest.
Lacerda improves to 1-2 in the UFC, likely saving his career with the submission victory.
Saimon Oliveira has fought some tough competition since winning a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021.
Oliveira lost to Tony Gravely, a 13-0 Daniel Marcos, and Daniel Martinez, who’s currently ranked #11 in the UFC bantamweight division.
The loss brings Oliveira to 0-4 in the UFC.
After this 8 lb weight miss, this could be the last we see of the Brazilian in the Octagon.
