Michael Morales has put the UFC welterweight division on notice with his absolute destruction of a very well respected top welterweight in Gilbert Burns via a first round stoppage Saturday in Las Vegas.
In what was supposed to be a massive step up in competition for the 25 year old, he passed the test with flying colors. The 25 year old improves to (18-0) and is 6-0 since he’s joined the UFC with 4 knockouts.

With a breakout performance, you can certainly bet that Morales will break into the top 10 rankings of the division. Such a display of dominance puts the whole division on notice now. In the post fight interview in the ring, Morales was very transparent in expressing his concerns coming into the fight.
“Every fight is tough, but I was very nervous back there in the locker room,” Morales said through an interpreter. “They told me, ‘Trust yourself, trust what you can do, trust your potential.’ We put in the work and made it happen. My mother and grandmother told me to put the heavy hands on him and the rest will be easy.”
Burns (22-9) is now on a 4 fight losing streak. His previous 3 loses were against the top fighters in the division. But losing tonight is most likely the nail in the coffin for him to stay in contention in the UFC welterweight division.
Morales has certainly thrown his name into the hat as a major contender for a title shot. He’s a few victories away from that happening but if he continues to impress then he’ll be getting a title shot very soon at this rate.
