One fighter has issued a challenge to Khamzat Chimaev as he prepares for his first title defence.

Despite holding the belt, Chimaev seems to already be thinking beyond the division, hinting at a future move up to light heavyweight.

He’s not expected back in the Octagon anytime soon though, with an upcoming operation set to sideline him for several months.

Chimaev has pointed to Nassourdine Imavov as his likely first opponent but has openly admitted that he isn’t particularly eager about taking that fight.

A familiar face from Chimaev’s past is looking to add another layer of intrigue by proposing a wager tied to his comeback bout.

Joaquin Buckley offers Khamzat Chimaev money if he strikes for one round in his next fight

Khamzat Chimaev put on a dominant display at UFC 319, putting in one of the most lopsided showings of the year.

It was such a non-contest that some have called it one of the least competitive title fights ever held inside the Octagon.

However, not everyone was impressed with Chimaev’s performance. Despite controlling every moment against Dricus du Plessis, many felt he played it too safe and never really pushed to finish the fight.

Buckley shared his thoughts on Instagram after seeing footage of Chimaev hitting pads, questioning why he bothers practising striking if he doesn’t plan to use it in fights.

Buckley also offered an incentive for both fighters: “So look Khamzat, this is what I’m gonna do for you. If you [are] able to stay on your feet for one round, just on your feet and not use your wrestling, I’ll give you fifty thousand dollars. Oh, you heard me right… Guess what? Nassourdine if you’re able to match that, that means that’s a hundred thousand.”

Khamzat Chimaev nearly fought Joaquin Buckley backstage in 2022

It seems Khamzat Chimaev had plans to strike during his recent title defence before his team stepped in and urged him to stick with what was working.

If there’s one thing we know about Chimaev outside the cage, it is that he doesn’t shy away from confrontation – something Joaquin Buckley found out personally.

The pair crossed paths ahead of UFC 273 back in April 2022. While speaking with Darren Till about a possible fight between them down the line, Buckley found himself interrupted by Chimaev.

The conversation quickly escalated from polite interest into an intense exchange after Khamzat told Buckley directly: “If we are fighting brother then why are we talking?”
