UFC wants to host event at MSG Sphere in Las Vegas

The UFC is already a massive draw in Las Vegas, but a new venue could bring even more onlookers into its orbit if the stars align next fall.

The mixed martial arts promotion is reportedly interested in hosting a fight event at the MSG Sphere at the Venetian Resort, which opened its doors to the public in late September.

Adam Stern of the Sports Business Journal said that CEO Dana White is considering booking the city's newest attraction for Mexican Independence Day weekend in 2024, which would be September 14-15.

The Sphere is an 18,600-seat arena with both a wraparound interior LED screen and an exoskeleton also made from LED screens. Designed to bring an immersive experience for concerts, shows and other events, it made brief but notable impacts in sports since its soft opening over the summer when the NBA used its exterior to promote Summer League basketball.

The venue also went viral for its impressive yet freaky displays of different objects, most notably a giant eyeball looking out onto the rest of the Las Vegas Strip. Likely, the Sphere's sponsorship of the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix in November won't have the same effect on people in the area as the F1 race will provide ample opportunities for the exoskeleton to dazzle the masses.

In his tour of the facility, Greg Kahn of MediaVillage alluded to the future of live events at the Sphere, including the potential to "feel" the moment, if you will:

MSG Sphere is introducing several advancements, including multi-sensory 4D technologies that enhance storytelling and create an immersive "somewhere else" experience for the audience. The venue’s 10,000 immersive seats come with an ”infrasound haptic system” that will use deep vibrations so guests can “feel” the experience — such as the rumble of thunder or a roaring motorcycle.

The technology may not be there for every event the Sphere hosts, but the idea that fans could feel punches and kicks for a UFC main event is both brilliant and frightening.

UFC just hosted its first major card since officially merging with WWE to form the TKO Group in early September. It was also UFC's first event on Mexican Independence Day weekend, and from all accounts, "Noche UFC" will be a signature weekend for the promotion going forward.
