Since Jon Jones’ retirement announcement, the drama surrounding the former UFC heavyweight champion has only escalated. For a fighter who’s never been far from headlines—good or bad—this latest chapter feels all too familiar. One minute, he’s walking away from the sport with a heartfelt statement; the next, he’s back in the news with fresh allegations, bodycam footage, and legal blowback. What was supposed to be a clean break from the Octagon has turned into another storm brewing in Albuquerque.
In February, Jones was accused of fleeing the scene of a crash involving an intoxicated, half-clothed woman who told officers that 'Jon Jones, the fighter' had been driving. The woman claimed he fled on foot after the accident. Bodycam footage from the scene, released Monday by Albuquerque Police, appears to show her making a speakerphone call to a man she identifies as Jones.
The man never confirms his identity but makes veiled threats to a police safety aide, including references to violence and 'brothers who kill people for less.'
Despite repeated attempts by officers to confirm who was on the phone, the man on the other end never answers directly. Police later subpoenaed Jones’ phone records, showing multiple calls and messages to the woman during and after the time of the crash.
Jones has denied being the driver, saying the woman left his house intoxicated earlier in the day and contacted him later. His attorney, Christopher Dodd, has slammed the case as baseless and accused APD of targeting his client.
'Jon was not driving that night; he wasn’t in the car. It appears that an intoxicated woman used a false allegation against Jon to avoid being arrested for DWI, and the police fell for it.'
'They went so far as to seek a warrant for Jon’s cell phone records… I have never heard of such a thing.'
As for why the charge was filed months after the incident—and just before Jones’ retirement—UFC President Dana White admitted the timing has raised eyebrows. In a video interview with The Mac Life, White said: 'Maybe that is why he retired. Who the hell knows. I don’t know. These are all questions you’ll have to ask him.'
Jones has since posted on X (formerly Twitter), cautioning fans: 'Keep in mind, even the media can get it wrong sometimes if they don’t have all the facts.'
"Keep in mind, even the media can get it wrong sometimes if they don’t have all the facts. Don’t believe everything you read online."

The misdemeanor charge of fleeing the scene is now active, with a court appearance scheduled for July 24. Jones and his legal team have not commented further beyond Dodd’s written statement. As speculation mounts and footage circulates, one thing is clear: Jon Jones’ retirement won’t be quiet.
