Alexander Volkanovski has proposed a double retirement fight with lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, with both men hanging up the gloves afterward.
Volkanovski isn’t chasing Gaethje’s belt, despite his earlier lightweight title fights with Islam Makhachev. He says a champion-vs.-champion bout would mean both men vacating their titles so neither division is held up.
“I’m not the one to just call for title fights. There are so many guys who are deserving in that division, but I just look at it like if I can fit into this equation, it could be the fact that Justin’s unsure of what he wants to do.
“He doesn’t want to do rematches, and I haven’t fought him…if we were to do something like this, a super fight with champion vs. champion, we wouldn’t hold up the divisions. We’d be vacating [our titles], I don’t want to hold up the lightweight division… I don’t deserve to take someone’s spot,” Volkanovski
