UFC president Dana White believes this will be the year we see Jon Jones defend his heavyweight championship vs. Stipe Miocic.
While he declined to put an exact date on the much-promised super-fight, he did tell Jim Rome it is targeted for summer or fall of 2024.
“(Jones) is doing well,” White said (thanks to MMAMania for the quotes). “We’ll see him soon. We’ll either see him in the summer or the fall.”
Jones and Miocic had an original date of UFC 295 last November. That card was set for Madison Square Garden in New York City.
During training, though, Jones suffered a torn pec muscle and had to pull out. Instead of taking another fight, Miocic, a former champion, has remained on the sidelines.
In the meantime, Tom Aspinall has become the interim UFC heavyweight champion. He topped Sergei Pavlovich that the November card for the belt. Aspinall is set to defend vs. Curtis Blaydes later this year.
The UFC lineup is pretty packed at the moment with summer beginning in just days. UFC 303 later this month has a new main event after the exit of Conor McGregor.
The July UFC 304 card is set along with the August UFC 305 event in terms of headline bouts. That leaves UFC 306 scheduled for The Sphere in Las Vegas as the next available opening.
Would the UFC pair Jones and Miocic at such an event? White has claimed in the past plans to do just one card at the unique site.
