Marco Bezzecchi has reacted to Jorge Lorenzo’s view that the 2026 MotoGP title is already his to lose, following a strong start to the season.
With Le Mans on the horizon, Bezzecchi holds an 11-point lead over Jorge Martin in the championship standings.
The Italian opened with three straight Grand Prix victories before Alex Marquez took control at Jerez. Even so, Bezzecchi’s second-place finish was still a solid result for his title push.
Although VR46 boss Pablo Nieto has suggested Marc Marquez remains the title favourite, Lorenzo offered a different take, one that drew a response from Bezzecchi.
Lorenzo, speaking on the Duralavita podcast, didn’t hesitate when asked for his early thoughts on the championship picture.
The three-time MotoGP champion said: “We have only raced four Grands Prix, but for me this year, only Bezzecchi can lose the title.”
Lorenzo’s comments marked a shift from his earlier prediction that Pedro Acosta would be the rider to dethrone Marc Marquez.
Asked about those remarks ahead of the French Grand Prix during his media duties, Bezzecchi responded with a smile.
“His comment is similar to those of you journalists,” he joked. “Of course, I’m pleased because Jorge is one of the strongest riders ever in MotoGP.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet him, talk to him, and even ride with him at [Valentino Rossi’s] ranch. So I’m pleased he thinks so, but it’s still very early.”
“It doesn’t make sense for me to think about these things right now. I have to try to focus and do a good job on the track.”
The kind of pressure riders face early in the season is a world away from what comes later on, especially when championships are at stake.
This is Bezzecchi’s fifth year racing in the premier class, but it’s the first time he has started a season with genuine title hopes attached to his name.
That lack of experience at the sharp end is why some, like Sylvain Guintoli, have started to wonder how well Bezzecchi will cope if this race goes deep into the calendar. That will be something to keep an eye on as the points race tightens up.
Guintoli has pointed out that Marquez brings championship-winning experience that Bezzecchi simply hasn’t built up yet. If this title fight stretches into the closing rounds, it could be an interesting watch.
