Going into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs, Corey Heim has 65 playoff points, 39 more than second-best. He has led 1127 laps this season in 18 races. No one else in he series has led more than 263 laps.
With the NASCAR Playoffs, Corey Heim is guaranteed nothing. In fact, he could theoretically get eliminated in the first round. He has seven wins this season, and it won’t be hard to imagine him getting to 10+ before it is all done.
Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports was on Door Bumper Clear this week. He talked about Heim’s upcoming playoff run, which begins at Darlington.
“I believe so,” Pockrass said, confirming Heim’s playoff point total. “But look at their second round of the Truck playoffs to get into what I would call the semi-final round: the Roval, because they add that this year, then Talladega, and then Martinsville. Is 65 points enough? I mean, you could lead in 90 percent of each of those three races and end up 30th in each of them. So, yeah, it makes you feel good. It will certainly get him out of the first round. I don’t know how many points you would need to survive, to potentially feel safe for that round.”
Pockrass isn’t wrong about the second round of the NASCAR Truck Series Playoffs. Corey Heim is more than likely going to be fine in the first round. He might be able to advance with three straight DNFs. Of course, he wants to win every race and leave no doubt.
However, the second round plays a major factor. The Truck Series playoffs go from 10 to 8 to the Championship 4 very quickly. Seven races separate these 10 drivers from the championship. Heim has been fantastic on the road courses in the Truck Series. But Talladega and Martinsville are always wildcards, especially for the tailgaters.
Corey Heim has clearly been the best driver in the series. The thing is, he’s left a handful of races out there that he should have won. He led the most laps at Homestead, but the power gave out on his truck. He also led the most laps at Martinsville, Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, and Pocono. Each time, a late race mishap took the win from the 11 team.
The Truck Series Playoffs are starting soon. Can Heim remain dominant and win the elusive title that has evaded him the last two seasons?
