Folks, that was one of the best NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finishes you will see. Carson Hocevar over Layne Riggs at Kansas. If Riggs had even an ounce of grip left in those tires, he might have pulled off the last-lap pass. It just wasn’t meant to be.
Layne Riggs hit the wall once by himself. Then he put himself and Carson Hocevar into the wall on the last lap. Both drivers kept their foot in the gas, through the damn floorboard. Just fantastic racing from both drivers to keep racing and not end up wrecked.
Multiple times this season, Riggs has gone toe-to-toe with Cup Series talent. Kyle Larson gave him fits. Now Hocevar. But Riggs has shown that he likely deserves a shot at an Xfinity Series ride, and perhaps one day, the Cup Series.
Carson Hocevar led the most laps and really had an awesome defense at the end of the race. Riggs came at him, ripping the wall like he was Yung Money. He just fell a little short.

Following the physical clash on the last lap, Carson Hocevar was juiced up. He stuck his left hand out the window and flipped Layne Riggs off, racing to the finish. I mean, how can you hate Hocevar? Is this not what everyone wants NASCAR to be? Rough, physical, no-filter racing with high emotions and big personalities?
Riggs seemed to take issue with it. That’s something the two drivers can discuss together. But what I don’t want to overlook is the great racing that Riggs put on. He put that thing up on the wall and really gave it his best shot. Eating away at the lead, he almost put himself in Victory Lane tonight. The heroics ran out on the last lap as he tried to make the pass. Tough luck.
In the end, both drivers made it to the finish. Carson Hocevar led 75 of 134 laps on the night. Elsewhere in the field, Corey Heim was a hard charger after suffering a restart penalty late in the race. He managed a P4 finish. A lot of interesting finishes.
William Byron was strong but just never had that extra speed to really challenge for the win. He was hoping that Hocevar and Riggs would wreck themselves on the last lap. Still, a strong P3 finish for Byron ahead of tomorrow’s Cup Series race.
Tonight there were five cautions for cause. It was another fun night of Truck Series action with a healthy balance of long and short green flag runs. Seriously, what is there not to like about the product that this series is putting out right now? Quick, two-hour races, big names, future stars, and fantastic finishes like tonight.
Carson Hocevar is hoping that his Truck Series success translates to Sunday in the Cup Series. But overall, he showed why Spire wanted to move him up so early in his career and get him racing on Sundays as soon as possible. Will the good times keep rolling for Hocevar at Kansas?
