For those who tuned into this past Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, you probably saw Chase Elliott pop up on the FOX broadcast.
Elliott, the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion, was one of many athletes/entertainers at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans and was briefly shown in between plays. Elliott revealed during Wednesday’s Daytona 500 Media Day that he wasn’t informed ahead of time he would be shown on the broadcast and was glad he wasn’t “doing something stupid.”
“No idea and that’s the thing too, it’s like I didn’t know anything about the timing, if that was gonna even be a thing,” Elliott said on The Teardown podcast with Jordan Bianchi and Jeff Gluck of The Athletic. “I feel like any time you’re in those environments you’re like I hope I’m not doing something stupid. … Don’t be that guy for sure, but I honestly didn’t think anything about being on TV at the Super Bowl.
“Must have been a really bad game if they’re showing me on TV. But obviously, FOX is a great partner, and I do think it’s a great opportunity for us as an industry to — me or whoever, I’m not saying about myself in particular — but the Daytona 500 is seven days away at that point in time. We share a great network partner in FOX, and they were showing the Super Bowl. So, I do think it’s a great opportunity for us to have that. Thankfully, the game was bad, and they were bored enough to help us out a little bit.”
As for the Super Bowl experience itself, Elliott had a good time despite the lopsided score. The Eagles defeated the Chiefs, 40-22. Elliott said he had never been to a Super Bowl or New Orleans before.
“It was really fun,” Elliott said. “The game was not good, but it was cool. I had never been to the Super Bowl, never been to New Orleans. So, just the whole experience was really neat and everything you kind of think a Super Bowl would be in just how they do the production, halftime show — like watching the whole logistics thing with that is pretty incredible. I had fun and it was a quick turn to get back down here [Daytona].”
The 29-year-old had a quick turnaround to get down to Daytona to start preparing for Sunday’s 67th running of the Daytona 500. Elliott will be making his 10th start in the Great American Race, looking for his first win.
