The Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway was a race to forget for Joey Logano and Cole Custer. The two were involved in an unfortunate pit road incident that ended their race prematurely.

The incident took place under caution on the pit road on Lap 94 when both Custer and Logano entered the pit road. Logano was done with his stop was exiting the road. Custer, who’s stall was ahead of him arrived at his spot but stopped for a second to give Ty Gibbs space to exit his. Logano had no time to control and crashed the left front end of his car into Custer’s, ending the day for both.

Post-race while talking to NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass, Cole Custer explained his side of the incident. “Just a really tough spot. Everybody’s taking tires or fuling on that stop and tried to give way to 54 (Ty Gibbs), and it’s just a narrow pit road. Somebody ran in the back of us and hit us, whoever it was, I guess, but just a tough spot,” he said.

Custer further explained, “I feel like if i dove in there, I probably would have hit the 54, and he’s running up there, and I don’t want to ruin his day. But then I have to slow down so much that I’m in the way for everybody else, so it’s just a tough spot to be in.”

With the crash taking place, both drivers recorded a DNF at the Texas race.

Joey Logano explains his side

After getting out of the car, Logano spoke to FOX Sports’ Jamie Little, during which he reflected on the crash. “Everyone was trying to get two tires, and the whole field is passing you because the pit stops are so fast on two tires. He just checked up in front of me, stopped, and you’re trying to look and try to get up out of the way, and it just stopped. There was nothing I could do. I couldn’t stop in time.”

The #22 Team Penske driver further spoke about how he had missed out on a similar incident involving the #24 of Hendrick Motorsports.

Joey Logano also reflected on his race before the crash. “It’s been a tough year, Jamie, to say the least. But prior to the speed we had today, the Discount Tire Mustang had good speed…At the end of the stage, we’re one of the best, if not the best car, which makes it hurt even more to be honest with you. But glad we had speed at least, and all you can do is keep digging.”

The NASCAR veteran’s season is not panning out the way he would have wanted it to. He is currently 17th in the standings with a 291-point deficit from the leader.
