Connor Zilisch provided an update Sunday on when he could potentially return behind the wheel of a racecar after suffering a broken collarbone after Saturday’s Xfinity Series race. Zilisch told Marty Snider of TNT Sports that there is no timetable yet for a return, but he’s motivated to make it back “as soon as possible.”
“We’re still working out with all the doctors to figure out what’s gonna be the next steps,” Zilisch said. “But I’ve got a little motivation from Shane [van Gisbergen], my teammate, he had a plate put in and raced the weekend after. So, I don’t know if I’ll be that quick but hopefully my young bones will hea l fast, and I’ll be able to get back in it as soon as possible.”
Zilisch, 19, was supposed to be racing in Sunday’s Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International. But after his win on Saturday, Zilisch slipped and fell off the top of his car while celebrating in Victory Lane. Zilisch, who fell awkwardly on the ground, was transported to a nearby hospital. Zilisch said he suffered a broken collarbone.
He returned to Watkins Glen less than 24 hours removed from sustaining the injury. Zilisch, wearing a sling on his left arm, spent time chatting with drivers and crew members. He told Snider that he’s doing OK, adding he’s “very grateful to be walking today.”
“Yeah, first of all, I’m doing OK,” Zilisch said. “Very grateful to be able to walk away from that, and I guess I didn’t walk away, but very grateful to be walking today and just be alright. Thank you to all the medics who took care of me. Everybody who reached out and wished me well, I do appreciate it a lot. And yeah, I was climbing out of the car and obviously the window net was on the door. As soon as they started spraying water, my foot slipped . The last thing I remember was being halfway down and falling.
“So yeah, glad it wasn’t any worse and that the collarbone is the extent of the injuries but hate I couldn’t make it to the race today and give myself a shot to go get a good result for Trackhouse and Red Bull.”
The Xfinity Series is off next weekend before returning Aug. 22 at Daytona International Speedway. Zilisch has already missed one race this season due to a back injury.
