Dale Jr. Fearful of Arrest Trying to Visit Dad’s Grave Because of Teresa Earnhardt Decision

Teresa Earnhardt has often been referred to as the "Wicked Witch of the South" in NASCAR circles. The ugly nickname is the result of her involvement in various family and business disputes, particularly with Dale Earnhardt Jr., including the No. 8 trademark, which he got earlier this year after Teresa unexpectedly surrendered the rights to it.

But in a Washington Post article this week about Junior, his relationship with his father growing up and how he's matured since his dad’s untimely death on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, fans learned something new about Teresa and a decision she made that has Junior and his sister, Kelley, fearful of visiting their father's gravesite.

According to the story, Kelley said she and Junior were never invited to look through sentimental possessions, childhood items or family photos after their father's death. She said Teresa rejected their input when planning Dale’s funeral and choosing a gravesite.

Earnhardt’s final resting place is described as being “near Highway 3, behind a tall screened fence, down a dirt road, protected by cameras and more fencing. Not far from a pond is a walkway that leads to a mausoleum with Earnhardt stamped in gold.”

Teresa invited both kids to see the site after their dad’s interment, according to Kelley. But she hasn’t been back since. That's because it’s understood that she and her brother are unwelcome. “She’s so extreme,” she said of Teresa “that we might get arrested.”

The reporter, Kent Babb, said he tried to reach Teresa directly but couldn’t. Her lawyers declined his interview requests and did not respond to a question about whether Kelley and Junior actually are prohibited from visiting their dad’s grave.

Interestingly, he reported that Junior suggested he “might have” gone back by himself one time in a moment that was “fueled by some combination of liquid courage and that Earnhardt defiance.” He invited himself to “sit and think.”

That secret visit, however, was around two decades ago and he hasn't been back since.
