Daniel Hemric's 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season hasn't gone to plan, but the 2021 Xfinity Series champion has shown some resolve over the past two races.
With Hemric sitting 27th in points, it'll take a win for the No. 31 team to vault into the playoffs. However, putting together good results could lead to said win and, at the very least, builds momentum for next year, if Hemric were to return to the No. 31 car in 2025.
Chaos, attrition, strategy, @NASCARChicago had it all. Tough deal for our @KauligRacing teammates, but heck of a call by @wtrentowens to take the gamble and give us track position. Hung on from there for a p-12 finish. Day maximized pic.twitter.com/X3YsdX2HCJ

Don't let Hemric's last two finishes of ninth and 12th fool you — the No. 31 team hasn't magically found top-10 speed. They have, however, managed to produce good results at both Nashville and Chicago, a good trait to have in the wild world of modern-day NASCAR.
At Nashville, Hemric took advantage of five overtime restarts to earn his third top-10 finish of the season. At Chicago, Hemric qualified all the way back in 35th, but was on the right strategy when the pay window opened, finishing 12th.
While it's certainly necessary for Hemric and his team to start unloading with better speed under the hood, it's a good sign that the struggling No. 31 group is able to be opportunistic. In races that usually seem to boil down to chaos, sometimes all you have to do is be in the right place at the right time.
The fate of Hemric's season will likely come down to whether or not the No. 31 team can score a miraculous victory at Daytona that would snag them a playoff spot. If they keep finding themselves coming out on the clean end of chaos, they just might be in the perfect spot to manufacture a win in what will be the biggest race of their season.
